Sovereignty Spotlight: Rocket Chat
By author: David Numan
This is the second Sovereignty Spotlight, but I think this topic ranks first in importance for many organizations. How do we keep our private conversations private? Two key factors are needed: security, and digital sovereignty. Many Canadian organizations use Slack or MS Teams, especially for hybrid or remote work environments. Not only are these chat platforms controlled by US companies, and fall under the US CLOUD act, but they also represent millions of dollars leaving our economy. A defense in depth security analysis should include a risk assessment of governments that have jurisdiction to access your data.
At CanShield Digital, we use Rocket Chat for internal comms, and we also have a chat pop-out on our website that connects into our Rocket Chat Omnichannel system. Feel free to try it out and contact me directly on Canadian hosted hardware.

There are a number of other alternatives available for self-hosted data sovereign solutions, notably Mattermost, and Nextcloud talk. Rocket Chat matches our requirements best and is an excellent product, built for sovereignty.
Rocket Chat published a guide earlier this month called “Enabling Digital Sovereignty” in which they state:
For modern public institutions, owning your data and securing your
communications is no longer optional, it’s essential.I believe this is true for both public and private sector organizations / businesses. The guide has a focus on the EU, but it is an excellent resource for any nation. It is available for download here: https://www.rocket.chat/ebooks/enabling-digital-sovereignty
Europe has many positive examples where they are achieving digital sovereignty and digital self-determination, for chat conversations as well as the whole range of software which organizations use.
Do you want to see your organization take steps toward digital sovereignty? Let’s chat! CanShield Digital is ready to learn about your context and find the right solution that works for you. We provide managed Canadian sovereign Rocket Chat service. Email: hello@canshield.ca or chat using the pop-out in the bottom right.
CanShield Digital is writing a series highlighting tangible alternatives to typical software that organizations choose. What software would you like to see in a Sovereignty Spotlight?
